GoPro | Bicycles Against Poverty
Growing up, Muyambi had to borrow bicycles from neighbors to help transport his mother to the hospital. After contracting malaria as a child, Muyambi himself was brought to the clinic on the back of a bike. Years later, while attending college in Pennsylvania, Muyambi saw an opportunity to apply for a grant and knew exactly how he wanted to give back. Muyambi is a native Ugandan, and the founder of Bicycles Against Poverty.
On average, rural Africans live three miles from clean water, five miles from a health center and over six miles from a market. Using a sustainable, community-based approach in coordination with a Ugandan bicycle company, BAP offers a lease-to-own bicycle model for rural smallholder farmers. BAP has distributed over 1,000 bicycles to date and plans to distribute 1,000 more in 2015 alone.
